The half-linen or linen mangle cloth was originally intended for doing the washing when they were pulled through the wringer in order to squeeze out the water. The finer fabrics would get damaged if pulled through a wringer on their own. The mangle cloth offered protection for this.
Obviously, the mangle cloth can still be used for its original purpose. These days many people use the mangle cloth as runner or as metre fabric to make something from it. It is a heavy quality fabric. The long side has a red or blue-coloured woven-in stripe and a selvedge. The historic linen mangle cloth has blue or red stripes across the entire width.
