Down comes from the abdomen of aquatic birds such as geese or ducks and grows under the protective coat of feathers. It can be compared to a very light snowflake. Each flake of down stores more area in relation to its weight than any other product (wool, synthetic fibre?). This volume of air present in the duvet forms the best insulation against the cold. Thus, the higher the percentage of down, the lighter, more insulating and softer the duvet is. All our natural duvets contain at least 90% down. When they are new, feathers are rounded, which gives the products’ filling spring, elasticity and structure. Thanks to feather, natural pillows adapt softly to the shape of the sleeper’s head and gently absorbs the movements and
pressures. Hey are also necessary in the duvet to help the down to bounce back when it has been compressed. It is the combination of down and feathers in well-defined proportions that ensures optimal warmth, lightness, breathability and compressability in each item. According to the classification following European regulations (EN 12934), our Essix home collection duvets are top of the range products.
To guarantee you the best quality natural products, we only use new down from adult geese or ducks where we know their origin.
Our CLASSIC product is created using duck down. We also have the PRESTIGE duvet in goose down, which will give you complete satisfaction with its absolute comfort. Goose down actually provides better thermal protection than duck down. Goose down flakes are fatter, so they store more air. The rarity of goose down makes it an exceptional material.
Essix Home Collection guarantees: New down: New down is fluffier, with better insulation and a far longer shelf-life than recycled down which is mostly used by global manufacturers.Down from adult birds: The best down comes from large adult birds. In fact, the older the animal, the more insulating its down is. For better quality, our duvets and pillows are made from down and feathers taken from adult animals. A rigorous treatment: The selection, washing and sterilisation at a very high temperature guarantees maximal hygiene for our products.
For our natural duvets we use very high quality cotton percale fabric: 91 threads/cm2. This very fine and tight weave ensures that the cover is waterproof. It prevents the feathers and down from moving. It is also a natural barrier against dust mites. These covers have a piping and double stitch finish which makes them hard-wearing. The way that the filling is arranged and sectioned plays an essential role in the performance and appeal of the duvet. The down must be free in order to retain its elasticity and its ability to absorb humidity. It must however be sectioned to avoid cold areas. For our natural duvets, we have used square stitching with spacers which contain the filling and prevent it from moving about in the cover. This stitching ensures absolute stability, while still allowing a perfect circulation of air between the squares.
Nothing equals a natural duvet with goose or duck feathers, for many reasons: - It is thermo-regulating: it allows air to circulate and clears humidity - It has the best isothermal properties - It has a shelf-life that is 2 to 3 times longer than synthetic duvets - It is lighter, softer and smoother.
Contrary to popular belief, feathers and down are not sources of allergies! These essentially come from dust and dust mites in bedding which do not stick to natural materials, but rather synthetic ones due to the static electricity that they generate. It is therefore recommended to regularly shake out your duvet and wash it once or twice a year to eliminate dust mites.
Ideally, the duvet must hang down by 20 to 30 cm on each side of the bed to avoid cold air getting in and to cover you all night long without the chance of becoming uncovered.
